Celebrating UK Designer-Makers
All roads lead to Robert Silver. This is not an idle utterance! I met Robert when he applied to Canopy Market, and it took me roughly a millisecond to accept his application. Not only did I want his work in the market, I wanted to see it for myself. A Robert Silver jug made it into my ceramics collection very shortly after ...
Since our initial meeting, our paths have increasingly crossed. He invited me to an exhibition of the London Potters – of which he is a member – at the Barbican Centre, sparking an ongoing and very fruitful relationship for me that continues to this day. I, in turn, invited him to join my curated area at Handmade Chelsea, which opened new opportunities for him.
In the intervening years he has joined me again at Chelsea, traded at Canopy Market, Greenwich Peninsula Market and lately The Market at Elephant Park, and he exhibited hiswork last year at The London Potters yearly exhibition at the Morley Gallery, which I had the pleasure of curating. This year he returns to Handmade Chelsea under the auspices of The London Potters. I wasn’t lying when I said all roads, for me at least, lead to Robert Silver!
His lovely work, described as “steam punk inspired” has a unique and very funky appearance, variously hand-built or thrown and combining separate elements. Stylish, industrial, fabulous to use and lovely in the hand, his pieces are at once “mechanical” with an unmistakable human touch.
Robert’s work can be viewed here.
